Choosing shore excursions and attraction tickets
The cruise line tour costs more and guarantees the ship waits. That trade is the whole decision.

Half the frustration with attraction tickets comes from not knowing which of four different products you just bought.
Listings for the same museum can look identical and be completely different things. It is worth being able to tell them apart:
Check which you are buying, and check whether the official site sells the same thing for less — for many museums it does.
A small number of sites operate hard capacity limits and reliably sell out weeks ahead: the Alhambra, the Borghese Gallery, Anne Frank House, the Vatican Museums in season, Sagrada Família. For these, advance booking is not an upsell, it is the only way in.
For everything else, advance booking buys convenience rather than access, and it costs flexibility. A morning you have already paid for is a morning you have to spend that way.
Between two listings at a similar price, the one with free cancellation up to 24 hours before is worth meaningfully more — especially on a cruise port day or at the end of a chain of connections. Check the cut-off and the time zone it is measured in.
Everything above is attraction ticketing — timed entry to a museum, a guided walk, a boat trip. A concert, a fixture or a theatre run is a different market with different rules: a fixed date, a finite number of seats, and a resale layer where prices float with demand rather than sitting at face value.
If part of the reason you are travelling is to be somewhere on a particular night — or you simply want to know what is on while you are there — that is covered on the event tickets page, through our ticketing partner StubOrder.
StubOrder is owned by the same person who owns this site. No commission is paid on that link; the connection is disclosed wherever it appears. Full disclosure.
The calculation changes completely when a ship is involved, because the cost of being late is being left behind. See choosing shore excursions and attraction tickets for how to decide which tours to take through the cruise line and which to book yourself.
We are not an agent for any of these companies and we do not take bookings. The provider you choose handles payment, confirmation, changes and refunds. What that means in practice.
At a few very busy sites in high season, yes — they can save hours. At most attractions the standard timed ticket already avoids the only queue that exists. Check recent reviews for the specific site and month rather than assuming.
Usually, and often cheaper. Resellers earn their fee on bundles, guided commentary, multi-language support and easier cancellation. If none of those matter to you, the official site is normally the better buy.
