PortMiami is close to Miami International — about nine miles — which makes this an easy transfer to get right and an easy one to get badly wrong, usually by flying in on the morning of the sailing. The distance is not the problem. The schedule is.
First, the rule that matters more than the route
Fly in the day before. A cruise ship leaves on its scheduled time and the gangway closes a fixed period before that. If your flight is delayed and you miss it, the line has no obligation to help unless it sold you the flight, and catching the ship up at the next port is entirely at your expense.
A hotel night near the port or the airport costs a great deal less than that. It also turns embarkation morning into a fifteen-minute taxi ride instead of a sprint.
From Miami International (MIA)
PortMiami is roughly nine miles from MIA. The options, in the order most people should consider them:
- Cruise line shuttle. Most lines run coaches from the airport on embarkation day. Pre-arranged cruise transport collects from the north bus station at Concourse D, level 1, door 1, or the south bus station at Concourse J, level 1, door 33. Book it with the cruise; it is not always available on the day.
- Taxi or rideshare. Taxis wait on the arrivals (ground) level outside baggage claim; a minimum fare of $15 applies to trips originating at MIA. Rideshare has designated pick-up zones, and all cruise terminals have taxi and rideshare access on cruise days. For two or more people with luggage this is usually the sensible choice.
- Public transport. It genuinely works: Metrorail's Orange Line from the airport to Government Center, then Metromover to Freedom Tower station, then the free City of Miami Coral Way Trolley across the PortMiami bridge. Three changes with suitcases is a lot of handling, but it is cheap and it avoids traffic.
- Private transfer. Pre-booked, fixed price, meets you at arrivals. Worth it for larger groups or anyone who would rather not negotiate anything after a long flight.
From Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood (FLL)
Flights into Fort Lauderdale are often cheaper, and the airport is smaller and quicker to get out of. The trade is distance: FLL is roughly 30 miles north of PortMiami, on the I-95 corridor that is reliably congested at rush hour. Budget an hour, and considerably more on a weekday morning.
Two useful points. First, if you are choosing between a cheap FLL flight and a pricier MIA one, price the transfer difference before deciding — it frequently cancels out the saving. Second, check which port your ship actually sails from. Port Everglades is in Fort Lauderdale and is a different port from PortMiami. A surprising number of people book the wrong airport because they assumed a "Miami" cruise leaves from Miami.
Brightline
Brightline, the intercity rail service linking Miami with Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Orlando, runs a Vacation Service that carries cruise passengers to and from PortMiami. It is worth a look if you are coming from further up the Florida coast, and particularly if your trip starts in Orlando — it removes the drive entirely.
How much time to leave on embarkation day
Cruise lines issue staggered arrival windows and terminals will generally not admit you before yours. Working backwards:
- Check the boarding window printed on your cruise documents. That is the real constraint.
- Allow an hour from an MIA hotel, or two from Fort Lauderdale, on a weekday.
- Terminal security and check-in on a busy day can take 45 minutes to an hour by itself.
- The gangway typically closes 60 to 120 minutes before the scheduled sailing time, but this varies by line and ship — confirm yours rather than assuming.
Getting back afterwards
Disembarkation morning is busier than embarkation, because several thousand people leave at once into a small road network. If you have a flight the same day, book it for the afternoon rather than the morning — late morning departures from MIA are a common source of missed flights. Many lines offer a self-disembarkation option for passengers carrying their own bags, which gets you off the ship substantially earlier.
