Coaches to and from London
The coach out of London is the cheap mode and the slow one. The part nobody warns you about is the address: FlixBus alone lists fifteen London boarding points, and most of them are a numbered kerb.
Book London bus tickets
We take no bookings and hold no reservations. The provider you choose handles payment, confirmation, changes and refunds. How that works.
Coach travel out of London divides into a station and a pavement, and the two are sometimes fifty paces apart. Victoria Coach Station’s departures terminal is at 164 Buckingham Palace Road, SW1W 9TP, with staff, a ticket office and a left-luggage counter. FlixBus’s Luton Airport service does not use it: that one leaves from Stop 6, outside on Buckingham Palace Road, a detail FlixBus gives in a single line on its own stop page.
The brand selling the ticket is not always the company driving either. megabus runs no coaches of its own on London routes at all — its own London city guide says flatly that “all trips to and from London will be operated by National Express”. megabus still publishes its own luggage allowance, but the vehicle and the driver are National Express’s.
What follows is where each operator actually boards, what the luggage allowance is and what a second bag costs depending on where you buy it, and the published journey times set against the train. One trap runs through all of it: National Express measures some of its advertised fastest times from Golders Green rather than from Victoria.
Victoria Coach Station has two addresses, and opening hours that mean less than they look
The departures terminal is 164 Buckingham Palace Road, SW1W 9TP, and National Express lists station opening hours of 07:00–23:30, Monday to Sunday. Those hours are not the timetable, and the operator says so in terms: “Please note that the station opening hours will not affect your journey”. Only the ticket machines are confined to them. Coaches run outside them — the Heathrow service alone starts at 02:15 — so a 01:00 departure is a real departure from a building with limited service.
Arrivals are a separate place. Transport for London’s stop register carries two distinct records: Victoria Coach Station (NaPTAN 490G000813) at 51.49267, -0.14922 for departures, and London Victoria Coach Station Arrivals (490G000919) at 51.49343, -0.14901 — roughly 86 metres apart. If you are meeting someone off a coach, “Victoria Coach Station” is not a precise enough instruction.
Left luggage is inside the Ticket Office, open seven days a week 08:00–22:00, except Thursdays when it closes at 20:00. It takes items for up to one calendar month, from £2 per item regardless of size. That is the one facility a kerbside stop cannot give you at any price.
Turn up early. National Express’s Conditions of Carriage require passengers at the boarding point at least 10 minutes before the timetabled departure, and add that “we will normally release any seats (including those reserved, but unoccupied) within 10 minutes prior to the published departure time”. A reserved seat is not a held seat.
Getting there is its own short leg: the coach station is 300 metres from the tube, on the Victoria, District and Circle lines, with a bus stop directly outside. The adult pay-as-you-go bus and tram single is £1.75 with a £5.25 daily cap, rising to £1.85 and £5.55 at 04:30 on 1 November 2026 under the Mayor’s fare decision. The Hopper fare continues to allow unlimited free transfers within an hour of a first paid-for bus or tram journey, so the last-mile bus to the coach station is often free if you have already tapped once.
FlixBus lists fifteen London stops, and most of them are a kerb
FlixBus is the operator most likely to sell you a London departure that is not a coach station. Its London index lists fifteen boarding points:
- Victoria: Victoria Coach Station, and Green Line Coach Station on Bulleid Way, SW1W 9SZ
- Central: Marble Arch, Park Lane W1K 7AE; Paddington, 146 Praed Street W2 1RH; Liverpool Street, 155 Bishopsgate EC2M 3TQ
- West: Hammersmith Bus Station Bay D; Hammersmith Bridge Road, 5 Black’s Rd W6 9DT; Earl’s Court Warwick Road Stop C and West Cromwell Road Stop D
- North: Finchley Road Stop CL, 235 Finchley Road NW3 6NN; Finsbury Park Interchange, Isledon Road Stop T; Wood Green, Lordship Lane Stop V; Enfield, Southbury Road Stop L
- East: Stratford, Montfichet Road E20 1EG; Redbridge Underground Station
Green Line Coach Station is the one that catches people out, because it is not Victoria Coach Station and it is not inside it. FlixBus calls it a five-minute walk away and boards from stop 5 for the Southampton, Bournemouth and Poole service (UK061), the Cheltenham, Swindon and Gloucester service (UK044) and the Birmingham and Coventry service (UK024). Allowing for Victoria and then walking is not the same as allowing for Victoria.
FlixBus asks passengers to arrive at least 15 minutes before departure and closes gates two minutes before the departure time — a tighter cut-off than National Express’s ten-minute rule, and one that assumes you are standing at the right stop already.
The Oxford Tube boards at a numbered bay, and its own timetable admits the traffic
Oxford is the corridor where the coach genuinely competes, and the Oxford Tube uses four London stops, none of them a terminal in the ordinary sense: Victoria Coach Station stop 10 for departures towards Oxford, Marble Arch Park Lane stop 14 outbound and stop S inbound, Notting Hill Gate Station stop N, outbound only, and Shepherd’s Bush Holland Park stop HD outbound and stop HJ inbound. Coming back from Oxford, Notting Hill Gate is not an option at all.
The timetable is the one commencing 31 May 2026, and it is unusually honest about congestion. The first coach of the day, 05:25 from Victoria, reaches Oxford Gloucester Green at 07:15 — 1 hour 50 minutes. The daytime services are scheduled slower: 09:29 arrives 11:36, and 10:36 arrives 12:43, both about 2 hours 7 minutes. The traffic penalty is built into the published time rather than absorbed as lateness, which is worth more than a fast headline figure.
Luggage: the hard-shell rule, and what a second bag costs depending on where you buy it
National Express’s free hold allowance is two medium suitcases (70cm x 30cm x 45cm) or one large one (75cm x 50cm x 32cm), each up to 20kg, plus one piece of soft hand luggage up to 45cm x 35cm x 20cm and 10kg. The word soft is doing the work: apart from briefcases, “no hard-shelled cases, wheelie bags or hard-framed rucksacks/backpacks are permitted on board for safety reasons and must be stowed with hold luggage”. Your cabin-sized wheelie case goes underneath — at no extra charge, but out of reach for the journey.
The extra-bag price depends entirely on the channel. Bought on the website at the time of booking, or afterwards through My Account, an additional item is £10 single and £20 return. Bought at the station, from a ticket machine or from a third-party agent, the same bag is £15 single and £30 return — 50 per cent more for deciding at the door. Up to three additional items may be bought per leg.
megabus allows one large case (75cm x 50cm x 32cm, 20kg) or two medium ones (70cm x 45cm x 30cm, 20kg combined) plus a small soft hand bag, and extra pieces must be added at booking — maximum two, at £5.00 each, with no counter option later. Its liability for lost or damaged luggage is capped at £500. Bicycles are a firm no on English routes: bike space can be booked only for travel within Scotland, and “bicycles cannot be carried for cross country journeys or journeys within England”. Folding and children’s bikes are allowed but count against the standard allowance and must travel bagged or boxed in the hold.
FlixBus is the tightest on hand luggage: 7kg at 30cm x 18cm x 42cm, against National Express’s 45cm x 35cm x 20cm. Its hold bag is 20kg at 50cm x 30cm x 80cm, one extra bag of the same size may be added, and a single special item up to 30kg with length plus width plus height no more than 240cm is permitted. If you are switching operators on an out-and-back trip, check the smaller allowance, not the one you travelled out on.
The airport coaches, and the ones that never come near Victoria
Heathrow. National Express runs Victoria Coach Station to Heathrow up to 79 times a day, fastest 35 minutes, from £9.50 one way including the £1.50 booking fee. The first coach is 02:15, arriving Heathrow Central Bus Station 03:45; the last leaves 23:59 and arrives 00:40. At the airport end, most Terminal 2 and 3 coaches use Heathrow Central Bus Station, between the two terminals above the Underground station — but there are no National Express staff there, so a missed coach has nobody to rebook it, and passengers are told to arrive ten minutes early. Terminal 4 coaches use bus stops 12 to 17 outside arrivals, and Terminal 5 bus stops 9 to 15 on the arrivals level: kerbs, not a station.
Gatwick. Route 025, fastest 1 hour 5 minutes, up to 32 departures a day, first 02:00 and last 23:59 from Victoria Coach Station, calling at Heathrow Central and Heathrow Terminal 5 on the way and reaching North Terminal before South. Coaches use the lower level outside International Arrivals at North Terminal stops 4 and 5 and the lower forecourt stops 1 to 5 at South Terminal. Treat the 1 hour 5 minutes with care: Gatwick’s own page quotes 1 hour 45 minutes for the same journey, and Gatwick Express, from the mainline station a few hundred metres from the coach station, advertises the airport in as little as 31 minutes.
Stansted. Three National Express routes, and only one of them is a Victoria service. A8 is the Victoria route, via Waterloo, Southwark, Liverpool Street, Shoreditch, Dalston, Stamford Hill and Tottenham Hale. A6 runs to Paddington via Baker Street, St John’s Wood, Finchley Road and Golders Green. A9 serves Whitechapel, Liverpool Street, Bethnal Green, Mile End, Bow, Canary Wharf and Stratford, and never touches Victoria at all. A6 and A8 run up to every 30 minutes, A9 up to every 20, more than 150 services a day, with first departures of 00:35, 01:00 and 00:15 respectively. flibco adds a London service every 30 minutes around the clock to Liverpool Street, Stratford, Finsbury Park and Wood Green, and the coach station is a two-minute walk from the terminal. The rail alternative is 48 minutes to Liverpool Street every 15 minutes — but Oyster is not valid to or from Stansted, only for onward journeys once you reach Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale.
Luton. Again the busiest London route is not the Victoria one: the airport lists A2 to Paddington up to 31 times daily against A1 to Victoria Coach Station up to 13 and A31 up to 15. National Express quotes a fastest time of 40 minutes, and measures it from Golders Green, with up to 49 services a day from £7 one way, first 00:01 and last 23:30 from Victoria. Green Line 757 to Victoria runs every 30 minutes by day and hourly through the night, seven days a week, from bay K of the airport bus station directly outside the terminal entrance. The train has a surcharge the coach does not: the Luton DART shuttle from Luton Airport Parkway is £4.90 for an adult single, under four minutes, every five minutes in the peaks, and can be bundled into a through ticket by booking to Luton Airport (LUA). Compare the whole chain on the London flights page before assuming the train wins.
Coach against train, and the asterisk on the fastest journey time
Manchester is the clearest case. National Express advertises a fastest journey time of 4 hrs 15 mins — and prints, in brackets, “from Golders Green”. From Victoria Coach Station the real timetable says otherwise: the first coach, 07:00, reaches Manchester Coach Station at 12:20, 5 hours 20 minutes, and the last, 23:30, arrives 05:40, an overnight of 6 hours 10 minutes, with up to 27 departures a day on services 540, 422 and 424. Avanti West Coast puts London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly at approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. The train is roughly half the day.
The Golders Green qualifier is not universal, which is exactly what makes it easy to miss. It appears on the Manchester page and on the Birmingham page (2hrs 15 mins), but the London to Edinburgh page quotes its 9 hrs 40 mins from London Victoria. Check which point the headline figure is measured from before you compare it to anything.
Edinburgh is where the coach argument changes shape rather than losing it: only up to three services a day, on 591, 594 and 586, with the 08:30 from Victoria arriving 18:55 and the 22:00 arriving 07:40 the next morning. Nobody takes the overnight because it is quick. The London trains page covers what the same corridor costs in time on rails.
Two things have narrowed the coach’s usual advantage. Regulated rail fares in England were frozen from the week of 2 March 2026 — season tickets, peak commuter returns and off-peak returns between major cities — instead of the 5.8 per cent rise that would otherwise have applied, a saving the Department for Transport puts at £600 million across 2026/27. And flexibility on a coach is priced: Fully Flexible fares amend free up to departure, Standard fares carry a £5 amendment fee via My Account plus any excess fare, and Restricted tickets are non-amendable and non-refundable. The Change & Go add-on is £5 each way and lets you board any coach to your destination within 12 hours either side of the booked time, subject to seats; it is itself non-refundable. Booking through a registered My Account avoids the booking fee and saves £1.50 on every single purchase. See how coach booking works for the general version.
Common questions
Where do coaches leave from in London?
Victoria Coach Station’s departures terminal at 164 Buckingham Palace Road, SW1W 9TP, is the main one, but it is not the only one and arrivals are a separate stop about 86 metres away. FlixBus lists fifteen London boarding points, including Green Line Coach Station on Bulleid Way, a five-minute walk from Victoria Coach Station, and boards its Luton service from Stop 6 on the street outside. The Oxford Tube uses stop 10. Go by the stop number on your ticket.
How much luggage can I take on a coach from London, and what does an extra bag cost?
National Express gives you two medium cases (70cm x 30cm x 45cm) or one large (75cm x 50cm x 32cm) at up to 20kg each, plus one soft hand bag of 45cm x 35cm x 20cm and 10kg; hard-shell cases and wheelie bags must go in the hold, free of charge. An extra bag is £10 single or £20 return online, but £15 and £30 at the station or a ticket machine. megabus charges £5.00 per extra piece, maximum two, at booking only. FlixBus allows just 7kg of hand luggage at 30cm x 18cm x 42cm.
Can I change a National Express ticket after booking?
It depends on the fare. Fully Flexible tickets amend at no extra cost right up to departure. Standard tickets carry a £5 amendment fee through My Account plus any excess fare. Restricted tickets are non-amendable and non-refundable. The Change & Go add-on costs £5 each way and lets you take any coach to your destination within 12 hours either side of the booked time, subject to seat availability, and is itself non-refundable. Booking through a registered My Account avoids the £1.50 booking fee.
Can a child travel alone on a coach from London?
Not under 14. National Express requires a companion aged 16 or over throughout the journey for anyone younger. Those aged 14 and 15 may travel unaccompanied only on journeys departing from 5am and arriving at the booked destination no later than 10pm, and must carry proof of age or a signed letter of permission from a parent or guardian.
Is the coach ever faster than the train from London?
Not on the main corridors. The first coach of the day from Victoria Coach Station reaches Manchester in 5 hours 20 minutes against Avanti West Coast’s approximately 2 hours 45 minutes from Euston, and the advertised fastest coach time of 4 hrs 15 mins is measured from Golders Green, not Victoria. The coach competes on price and on overnight departures — the 22:00 to Edinburgh arrives 07:40 — rather than on the clock.
Does the national bus fare cap apply in London?
No. The Department for Transport states plainly that fares are capped locally in London, so it is excluded from the national scheme, which in any case does not cover coach services, school-only services or airport services elsewhere in England. London’s own adult pay-as-you-go bus and tram single is £1.75 with a £5.25 daily cap, rising to £1.85 and £5.55 at 04:30 on 1 November 2026. The national single-fare cap is due to fall to £2 from 1 January 2027.
